About Bhupen Uzir Smriti Rakshya Samiti

Assam, the cultural heart of the Northeast, has long been enriched by the contributions of visionary artists who shaped its musical and artistic identity. Among such luminaries stands Bhupen Uzir—a pioneer in music direction, sound engineering, and music production in the region. Born on 5th April 1953 in Jorhat, Assam, he dedicated his life to the advancement of Assamese music, cinema, and recording technology. His pathbreaking initiatives, including the introduction of digital recording in North East India and the establishment of professional recording infrastructure within the state, transformed the creative landscape of Assam. Following his demise in 2024, the Bhupen Uzir Smriti Rakhya Samiti was formed as a humble yet determined effort to preserve, protect, and promote his rich musical and cultural legacy.

Bhupen Uzir was not only a celebrated music director of more than twenty-five Assamese feature films, television serials, and documentaries, but also a visionary institution builder. Through his recording studio “AUDITEK” and later the “AUDITEK School of Music and Technology,” he created opportunities for generations of aspiring musicians and sound engineers. Many of his students are today well-established professionals across Assam and various parts of India, carrying forward the knowledge and discipline imparted by him. His pioneering role as the music director of Assam’s first private cassette, Ragini, and his efforts in preserving and producing Assamese folk traditions in modern formats, marked significant milestones in the evolution of the regional music industry.

The Bhupen Uzir Smriti Rakhya Samiti, established in 2024, is a duly constituted trust committed to safeguarding his creative works, technical innovations, and educational contributions. The objectives of the Samiti include the preservation and documentation of his musical compositions, film scores, recordings, and archival materials; the promotion of research and study on his contribution to music technology in the Northeast; and the organization of workshops, seminars, memorial lectures, and cultural programmes to inspire future generations.

The Samiti also aims to nurture young talents in music, sound recording, and music production by facilitating training programmes and collaborations, reflecting Bhupen Uzir’s lifelong commitment to mentorship. Through annual commemorations, music festivals, and educational initiatives, the Trust seeks to keep alive his spirit of innovation, creativity, and cultural pride.

The Bhupen Uzir Smriti Rakhya Samiti stands as a tribute to a pioneer whose life was devoted not only to music but to building institutions and empowering others. It is dedicated to ensuring that his legacy continues to resonate across Assam, the Northeast, and the nation for generations to come.
