About Bhupen Uzir

.

Bhupen Uzir (5th April 1953, Jorhat, Assam) was a visionary musician, music director, sound engineer, producer, and mentor whose pioneering contributions significantly transformed the musical landscape of Assam and the entire North East region of India. Beginning his musical journey at the tender age of 13 as a Spanish guitarist, he quickly established himself as a gifted instrumentalist and performer. Over the decades, he evolved into a multifaceted musical personality—working as a lead guitarist, music arranger, assistant music director under stalwarts like Bhupen Hazarika, and later as an independent music director for more than 25 Assamese feature films, numerous television serials, documentaries, and stage productions.

Bhupen Uzir was a true pioneer in the technical advancement of music in the region. He was the first to introduce digital recording technology in North East India, revolutionizing sound quality and professional recording standards. Through his recording studio “AUDITEK,” established in 1989, he created a professional platform for artists and filmmakers at a time when most recording work had to be done outside the state. He was also the music director of Assam’s first private cassette, “RAGINI”, followed by “BORDOICHILA” and “AKANIR GEET”, which marked the beginning of a new era in the local music industry. In 1971, he formed a band named “Vibrations” along with noted mandolin player Gopal Bodo, and the group performed extensively across Assam for nearly a decade, earning wide recognition for their musical excellence. In 1983, he established his own gramophone record label, “Vibration Records,” beginning with the EP record of Samar Hazarika—an initiative that marked a significant milestone in the growth of the local music industry in Assam. Under this banner, he released numerous gramophone records of various artists, contributing substantially to the development of regional music production. “Vibration Records” was also an approved banner of All India Radio. He further played a pioneering role in documenting and preserving Assamese folk traditions by recording and producing several forms of folk music for the first time in cassette and CD formats, including Tokari Geet, Siya Geet, Biyanam, Ojah Pali, and notably, the first cassette in the Bodo language.
As an educator and mentor, his contribution was equally remarkable. Through the “AUDITEK School of Music and Technology,” he trained and inspired numerous students in music production and sound engineering. Many of his pupils are now well-established musicians, sound recordists, and industry professionals, not only in Assam but across India, carrying forward his legacy of excellence and innovation. Recipient of numerous recognitions, Bhupen Uzir remains a towering figure in Assamese music history. The establishment of the Bhupen Uzir Smriti Rakhya Samiti is a heartfelt tribute to his lifelong dedication to music, technology, and cultural preservation. His legacy lives on through his works, his students, and the countless lives he touched through his artistry and mentorship.
